Guru Purnima, the day of the teachers

This Spark today closes the series of Sparks 2015/2016 honoring all the teachers full-heartedly. We have learned a lot of things because of the many gods and goddesses from the yoga tradition that have been the main characters throughout the past months.

Purnima means “fullness” and Guru is the teacher, literally the one that helps illuminate our lives. Normally the word “guru” is associated with the figure of the spiritual teacher that comes from India, however, it has a broader meaning since it refers to all those that teach and guide us: our parents, elders, teachers that patiently support us through our formative years and that continue supporting us in the path of life learning. The first full moon after the Summer solstice marks this special celebration and this year in happens on July 19th.

Here is the practice for the super heroes of yoga for this occasion:

It is said that honoring the teachers in this special day highly benefits the student who is filled with blessings.

  • Light up a candle in your meditation space, sit down, close your eyes and take a few soft and deep breaths.
  • Once you feel that the body is relaxed and the mind calm, open your eyes and write down on a piece of paper the names of all the teachers that you can remember. Include all the people that have taught you valuable things and that make you be who you are nowadays. You can also add the gods and goddesses from the Sparks or any other ascended teachers that come to your mind. If you feel stuck, breathe and wait until yo recall more names and teachers. Do not forget all the teachers that have taught at Zunray this year!
  • Fold the paper, hold it between your hands in prayer position near your heart center and send a message of gratitude to all of them. Say “thank you” as many times as your want.
  • Now place the paper near the candle or in your little altar, if you have one. You can surround it with flowers or any other offering like incense.
  • During the day remember those teachers as much as possible. Indulge in meditation and meditate all you can or wish.
  • This last step in most important: COMMIT TO YOUR SPIRITUAL BEING and dedicate yourself to deepen your practice.

Happy Summer to all, dear Zunray yogins!! Thank YOU, it has been an incredibly enriching year!!
The Sparks will be back in September. See you on the mat!

Om Shanti,
Zaira
