Surya, the Sun god
June 21st is not only the Summer Solstice, but it is also the International Day of Yoga and people all over the world celebrate this ancient tradition. This is why today´s Spark is dedicated to the Sun god.
He is said to be the son of the sky and husband of dawn. His body is all golden and crosses the heavens riding a gigantic chariot run by seven horses that represent the seven colors of the rainbow or the seven main energetic centers in the subtle body. He is already mentioned in the Rig Veda verses where he is described having hair like fire flames and being the one who cares for the generations of mankind from above.
In Vedic Astrology, Surya is considered the planet that rules over the other ones. Its nature, being warm and dry, controls the seasonal patterns and the cycles of day and night. Interestingly, it is associated with gold, wheat and Sundays.
Surya was “the first to be born” and from him come the elements that create matter in the natural world. He gives the vital force that sustains life, the Light and the energy of the Universe. He increases our resilience by strengthening our immune system. He rules over the power of will, the intellect and prosperity. He makes sure that we succeed in our worldly affairs, grants good luck and fulfills our ambitions.
The classical practice Surya Namaskar means “salutations to the Sun” and it is done accompanied by twelve mantras, one for each posture, that glorify Surya´s vivifying energy. It is beneficial for body and mind and yogins across the planet perform Surya Namaskar every morning at sunrise.
The practice for the yoga super heroes:
In order to join the network of people practicing yoga in the world this week let´s do several rounds of Sun Salutes every morning. You can adapt them to your level of practice and modify them according to the alignment that feels healthier for you. What is most important is that we all share the same intention of gratitude towards the Light, giver of life.
See you on the mat!
Om Shanti
