Brahma, creative intelligence
This week´s Spark closes the month with a reflection on the masculine creative aspect of the universe. Each January we renew energetically, make plans for the year and affirm new resolutions. All of that is part of the cyclic re-creation in our lives.
Brahma, the intelligent impulse of creation, emerges as the first personification of Brahman, the Absolute. With Vishnu and Shiva forms the yogic triad of the vital cycle of creation-sustenance-dissolution, but interestingly he hasn´t had as much relevance as the other two in the yoga traditions and there are very few temples or rituals dedicated solely to the figure of Brahma. It is said that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were born out of the cosmic egg hatched by goddess Ammavaru, who existed before the beginning of time.
He has four faces that look towards the four directions and each one of those represents a different aspect of our self: the physical, the mental, the emotional and the conscious intuition. Usually he is portrayed with a white beard, symbol of wisdom and experience. His hands don´t hold weapons (like many other gods and goddesses) but objects related with knowledge: the vedas, sacred texts; a lotus flower; a mala, rosary that marks the flow of time; and a recipient with water, element from which life comes in the Earth.
Brahma´s skin has a golden tone, he is usually dressed in white and seated on a big lotus flower. His vehicle is Hamsa, the great swan who is also present in goddess Saraswati´s images. It happens that she is his counterpart. Saraswati incarnates the creative power that balances Brahma´s vibration allowing material manifestation.
He is also the father of Dharma, the natural universal law inherent in each one of us and in all particles that make existence. Meditating on Brahma brings us to see every day as an opportunity to create greater harmony, peace and wisdom.
The practice for yoga super heroes this week is: include the wisdom of intellect and the self in the creation of our lives so mind and heart remain in a state of peaceful balance.
See you on the mat!
Om Shanti
