Lakshmi, goddess of good fortune and abundance

Another important Indian holiday is coming up, I am talking about the festival of Lights called Diwali, in which people celebrate the radiance of the inner Light that dispels spiritual darkness. One of the deities honored in Diwali is Lakshmi, goddess of good fortune, prosperity and abundance.

Lakshmi is like the good fairy of the yoga tradition. Beautiful, auspicious and willing to grant us any wish and shower us with all kind of riches. She is always on our side, as long as our behavior and state of awareness are pleasant and luminous, otherwise she disappears.

A few Sparks ago, I told you the story of the churning of the cosmic ocean of milk. Well, Lakshmi is one of the wonderful creatures that arose from it (almost like the birth of Greek Aphrodite) and she came to give Vishnu the power he needed in order to bring the material universe back into balance. Because of Lakshmi and Vishnu´s marriage, the memory of love was reborn and order was re-established. Lakshmi´s gift to the world is dharma, righteous living.

She pours gold coins over us, mortals, as a symbol of inner & outer abundance. Her energy encompasses material satisfaction but it goes deeper than that. She awakens the purity of the heart, brings forth the beautiful radiance of natural living and is related to all auspicious qualities like health, fertility, prosperity, beauty, well-being, optimism, vitality and joy.

She is always depicted sitting or standing over a big lotus flower, and often times she takes the name Kamala, lotus, because she is Life´s impulse to manifest and the power that preserves it. Lakshmi sustains and takes care of the Universe. While Durga is the strong protectress; Lakshmi is the blooming of nature, the fragrance of the flowers and the brightness of the day.

The superheroes’ practice this week honors the Lakshmi essence of Nature by cultivating a feeling of inner abundance and fullness of love. Light a candle as a remembrance of lighting your inner radiance and set the intention to contribute with your practice to the beauty and well-being of our planet.
