What will the course cover?

  • Anatomy and physiology of the postnatal woman – to include hormonal changes, pelvic floor recovery, birth trauma
  • Specific postnatal yoga practice and principles – to include safety issues, maternal posture, core strength, relaxation
  • Emotional Issues – to include reflection on birth, mother and baby attachment, feeding, spectrum of emotions following birth and postnatal depression
  • Housekeeping and Environment – to include class format, venue, health and safety, marketing and publicity

You will:

  • Learn about the physiology and anatomy of yoga through lectures and practice with particular reference to the postnatal period
  • Understand the special benefits of yoga in the postnatal period
  • Learn the necessary teaching skills to teach yoga effectively and safely to postnatal women
  • Become familiar with the common complaints and ailments, both physical and emotional, during the postnatal period
  • Be able to give appropriate information and/or advice about how yoga may help and when necessary to guide women towards other professionals
  • Understand the importance of housekeeping and environment, class format options, venue, advertising, and health and safety

Lolly Stirk: Lolly began her study of yoga in 1969. The birth of her daughter in 1974 inspired her to teach pregnancy and postnatal yoga. Since then she has been committed to developing and teaching her own innovative approach to yoga as a safe and effective practice for pregnant women and new mothers as well as becoming a doula and a Hypnobirthing Tutor. Lolly is a founder member of the Active Birth Movement and for 15 years she co-directed the Active Birth Teachers Training Course with Janet Balaskas and Yvonne Moore in the capacity of Yoga Course Director. She lectured to midwives at Thames Valley University and has conducted workshops for midwives, doctors, and osteopaths internationally and in the UK. Lolly is a founder member of YogaBirth. She continues her work with pregnant women and new mothers in West London as well as training teachers in this valuable work in the UK and in Europe.

Annabel Hargrave: Annabel has 3 grown up children is a grandmother and qualified as an Active Birth teacher in 1997. She went on to train as a yoga teacher in 2001 with John Stirk, Sophy Hoare and Peter Blackaby. She has been teaching yoga, antenatal and postnatal classes in south west London for the past 20 years as well as becoming a hypnobirthing tutor. Her enthusiasm and love of her work is infectious. She is also an experienced birth doula, breastfeeding counselor and bereavement counselor. Annabel is a founder member of YogaBirth.
